The birth of DuVernay's daughter occurred on August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for art and creativity. She worked as night nurses to afford her aunt to have the time she needed throughout the day for the love of literature, art, as well as theatre. Following graduation, she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay started producing for broadcast journalism while she was still at college. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was told to take a look at the junk from a home belonging to a jury member. Her disappointment was evident in the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to move into the field of public relations. DuVernay began her career as a junior public relations assistant in a tiny film studio, right after graduating from the college. She was promoted to the position and set up her own PR company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
